creating an interactive card game for children using a new nfc-technology

for Cartamundi

Challenge

This game is the result of an European Project Semester, where european students from different fields of study come together to work on a challenge together. We were asked to design a card game around a new nfc technology for Cartamundi, based in Turnhout, Belgium. Cartamundi provided the technology and we were asked to design an entire product that would sell this brand new nfc technology to another company, a showcase game. This product should combine all the good qualities of classic card games and  those of games played on screens. A true hybrid game. The game, the graphics, the packaging, the business - and  promotion plan needed to be developed. Throughout the project we also conducted different user tests, it was a true co-creation process with kids around the age of ten. I was appointed team manager for this project. I managed  a Polish designer, a Belgian ICT’er and a Polish business student. Working for a  successful company like Cartamundi was an instructive and rich experience. They were very pleased with the result and we have been told the technology's showcase in Japan went quite well.

Result

The end result is a fully working prototype. We created our own storyline, game design, graphics, smartphone application (for Android) and a brand. Throughout the process we did three rounds of user tests with the end-users, children. The first two tests were done without a functioning application and the third one with the application. The packaging with nfc-coils embedded serves as the gameboard and holds the card deck when not being used.
